


You usually do at least a few DB of gain reduction in each compressor. There's no right way to do it, but its common to use an 1176-style compressor first to shave off the loudest peaks which requires you to use fairly fast attack and release settings, followed by an LA2A-style compressor to apply gentle compression to the entire sound (not just its loudest peaks).
